The Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the largest sporting event in Africa and the third largest football competition in the world after the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. TotalEnergies is the title sponsor of the tournament as part of its eight-year partnership agreement with the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF). Like the Total CHAN 2020, the Total AFCON 2021 will take place in Cameroon.
This will be the 33rd edition of the Total AFCON, the second organized by Cameroon after the 1972 edition (won that year by Congo). 24 teams will try to win the much-coveted trophy among which Algeria, the title holder and the host country, Cameroon.
51 teams were participating in the knockout phase, which began in October 2019. It delivered its final verdict on 30 March 2021. The qualified teams and their fans will now perfect their preparation. Here are the qualified teams : Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Comoros, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Tunisia, Zimbabwe.
14 countries have already tasted the joy of winning the Total Africa Cup of Nations. Egypt leads the way with seven wins, followed by Cameroon with five titles and Ghana (4 titles). Will the Total Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021, see one of these 14 countries add a new win to its list or will a 15th selection add its name to the prestigious list of winners like Senegal, unfortunate finalist of the last edition.
